Given Singapore’s ageing
population and the increase in chronic conditions such as diabetes and
hypertension, community health management is an important
intervention.
This year, as part of
the Healthcare Services Employees’ Union’s (HSEU) annual community project, it
is working with Nee Soon East Constituency and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) on
a Community Outreach Programme in Nee Soon East to better educate the elderly
residents on health management such as exercises, healthy cooking/
eating.
The outreach event on 23
April 2011 saw some 300 residents participate in this initiative which includes
a basic health screening as well as health talks and healthy cooking
demonstration. HSEU Executive Secretary Patrick Tay was present to address the
residents. HSEU Executive Council and Welfare Committee members also actively
participated in the day's activities.
HSEU is working with
KTPH as the hospital is positioned in Yishun to bring integrated healthcare to
the residents in the Northern region of Singapore. As an
internationally-recognised Health Promoting Hospital, KTPH also actively seeks
to influence social habits through health promotion and
empowerment.
